Fran Summerlin was born and raised in Attalla, Alabama, and is a graduate of Anniston Academy and Sewanee: The University of the South, where she earned a degree in Forestry. In 1977, her father found a little farm in Steele, Alabama, bringing the family to the area that would become Fran’s lifelong home. After early work in education and conservation, she established Summerworth Down, LLC, a respected equine boarding and training facility. As a Certified Eventing Coach with the United States Eventing Association, Fran has trained riders and horses who’ve competed at the highest levels, including the Olympic Games.
In 2023, Fran led a successful grassroots campaign against a proposed hydroelectric project by Alabama Power that threatened homes and land in Steele. She organized public meetings, mobilized volunteers, partnered with local communities, and brought state and national attention to the issue. Her efforts not only stopped the project but also led to the formation of Save Chandler Mountain, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting the area’s natural and cultural resources.
Fran continues to live on her family farm in Steele, where she remains deeply committed to her community, conservation, and the land she calls home.
Meet Fran Summerlin

Steele means everything to me — it’s where my roots are, and where our future begins. As mayor, I’ll work every day to preserve what we love and push for the progress our town deserves.

Fran Summerlin On The Issues
A community is only as strong as its foundation. In Steele, that foundation starts with safe roads, clean water, and reliable sewage systems—basic needs that have too often been overlooked. As mayor, I’m committed to pursuing every viable solution, whether it’s through partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies or by securing additional funding opportunities. Because this isn’t just about pavement—it’s about protecting the quality of life for every person who lives and works in our town.
Laying the Groundwork
Steele’s first responders are the backbone of our community—answering the call in our most difficult moments, no matter the hour or conditions. As mayor, I’ll ensure they have the tools, training, and support they need by prioritizing funding for essential equipment, pursuing grants, and advocating for competitive pay and benefits. I’ll also keep communication open and collaboration strong, because supporting those who protect us isn’t just a goal—it’s a responsibility I take seriously.
Standing with Those Who Stand for Us
As mayor, I’ll ensure Steele’s government is open and transparent by sharing regular updates through social media, quarterly newsletters, and monthly public reports from every department. I’ll be a mayor who hold posted office hours and personally shares my phone number so you and every Steele resident can always reach me directly. Together, we’ll keep communication clear, accessible, and responsive, making sure your voice is heard because you, the people, are the heartbeat of this town.
Creating a Government for the People, By the People
Managing a small town like Steele comes with unique challenges that require strong, experienced leadership and a clear vision. Our convenient location with direct access to I-59 and prime real estate gives us the potential for wise, sustainable growth that honors our small-town character. As mayor, I will focus on creating opportunities through strategic partnerships – not tax hikes – to ease the financial burden on taxpayers. I’ll work closely with stakeholders to attract the right businesses and investments that benefit our community.
Investing in Our Future: A Stronger Steele
Steele’s natural beauty is one of our greatest assets — from Horse Pens 40 to our local farms. These places reflect our history, economy, and way of life. As mayor, I’ll work to protect our land through smart growth policies, support our local farmers, and collaborate with conservation groups to preserve our scenic and ecological heritage. I’m also committed to investing in parks and walking trails so that people of all ages can enjoy the outdoors. Together, we’ll keep Steele a community where nature and neighbors thrive side by side.
Preserving Our Natural Resources
Want to know more?
A strong town is more than roads and buildings — it’s the services that bring people together and improve daily life. I fully support the Steele Public Library and all it offers our community, from educational programs to internet access. As mayor, I’ll work to expand its reach and ensure it has the tools it needs to thrive. I’ll also prioritize resources like our senior center and other essential programs, so every resident – from kids to seniors – feels supported, connected, and proud to call Steele home.
